Spore, a complete letdown

Spore is now on sale in Australia.

Dont get hopes up too much, its just another overhyped game.
But then again, its for everyone so I guess that evens out.

Tried Spore out, it was fun to start with :-

Cell Phase

The idea is to feed on monsters, grow bigger, and as a result gain DNA with which you can alter your creature. You can gain up to 5 new parts.

The good:
- well animated
- easy to control
- simple to grasp
- the new parts do make a nice difference here

The bad:
- at this stage, creature design is in its infancy and there's not many options
- it's pretty repetitive - you eat, grow, design, eat, etc.
- too few DNA points stop you from building creatures similar to the ones floating around you.
- too simple in essence

Creature Phase

Here you really start to make your creature grow. There's hundreds of parts to collect here and a lot of combat (if you chose to).

The good:
- the combat is similar to WoW's system - you select an enemy and then proceed to use "skills"
- upgrading parts is quite fun - as you gain new limbs, your skills go up as well
- you can tweak your creature a LOT more than before and you feel more in control now
- UFO attacks!
- great animations in cut scenes - the 2001 spoof scene is great
- gigantic epic creatures roam the planet pretty cool to see, but not when they start chasing ya

The bad:
- the combat gets extremely repetitive. You only have 3 skills, two of which can be used in combat.
- terrible controls - often your creature will refuse to turn, will refuse to respond to your actions, will refuse to eat, etc.
- poor graphics - this is sub WoW graphics and those are already 3-4 years of age. I don't mind cartoony but that doesn't mean p**s poor textures, terrible shading, clipping, etc.
- the world is too artificial in design: nests at the same distance from each other, spawning carcasses for you to loot, etc.
- skills gained from limbs do NOT stack
- your creature is often too slow in doing what you tell it to: if you push the attack button, it will often wait a few seconds which can mean death
- death doesn't give you a punishment

Tribal Phase - Civilisation

Here it starts playing like an RTS, you collect food and wage war against other tribes while designing buildings and clothing for your tribesmen. Moves on to a more technological phase where you fight with tanks, ships and aircaft instead. Nukes are awesome :D

Space Age

Here is where it seems like they gave up making the game. You are the only space craft in the whole game for your race. You get to trade and fight and ally tens over other aliens from other worlds and with only one against all. Gets REALLY repetitive and tedious as you have to manage and build a whole universe of colonies for your race by yourself, just one tiny spacecraft. And with more colonies you establish, you get pirate attacks where you have to fend off by yourself, which means you have to travel over to the other side of the universe all the time just to defend as your race counts on you to save them.
Another disadvantage is that cutomization aspect of the game is compleatly irrelevant to the gameplay, it's purely cosmetic. And as a result, what was supposed to be this games biggest selling point simply isn't there.

And as quoted:-

'Spore Will Change the Way People Look at Games Forever,' Claims Creator Wright
by Chris Faylor Sep 05, 2008 11:20am CST tags: Spore

As Electronic Arts prepares to unleash Maxis' long-awaited life simulator Spore, creator Will Wright has noted his belief that its emphasis on player-made content will have long-term effects in the realm of video games.

"Spore will change the way people look at games forever and change hopefully the perception people have of their own creativity," he told the BBC.

Launching this Sunday in North America and already available elsewhere in the world, Spore (PC, Mac) tasks players with creating their own life form and then helping it evolve from a single-celled organism to a space-dominating race.

The complete game follows the release of the free Spore Creature Creator toolset, which resulted in all sorts of various monstrosities. The full version of the toolset hit retailers for $10, and has been among the best-selling PC games since its debut.

Both Wright and EA hope that Spore will be another cultural mega-hit, much like Wright's ultra-successful The Sims franchise. That brand became so popular that EA created a dedicated Sims division.

And while expansion packs and high sales are likely, Wright's hopes for the series extends into the realm of films and a television show. "Spore potentially has a wider net to cast [outside of video games] than The Sims did," he noted earlier this year.

In addition to PC and Mac, Spore will also arrive on Nintendo DS and iPhone by Sunday, though those releases will respectively focus on tribal warfare and cellular life instead of multiple evolutionary phases.

Romance Of The Three Kingdoms - RELOADED

Romance Of The Three Kingdoms is a long running series popular in Asia.

Its my most awaited game since the jap version was released and patched in chinese. RELOADED cracked and released this game a full 6 days ahead of its North American Street Date.

Description: Rediscover an ancient civilization with an explosive history in the most stunning edition of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Set during the end of China’s Han Dynasty and the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D., RTK XI presents the most visually captivating evolution in the history of the series. Blurring the line between video games and art, RTK XI features visuals evocative of classical Chinese ink-paintings along with debates and duels rendered in real-time 3D animation.

As the ruler of a kingdom, each player will have complete control over their territories. More than 40 base commands give players the power to govern cities, manage their personnel, practice diplomacy and much more. Complete freedom to develop markets, shipyards, outposts, forts and military units expand on the already substantial benchmarks established by previous editions of the series. Furthermore, players will watch the era come to life through the uniquely individual personalities of the more than 780 officers and supporting characters they will encounter.
Players will need to dig deep within to prove themselves adept at both the military and political arts in order to bring China under one rule. Domestic affairs, diplomacy and warfare are all conducted on a single vast 3D relief map, dramatically bringing to life the eight massive scenarios that lie before them.

Features:

  • Vivid 3D scenes inspired by classical Chinese ink paintings. Domestic affairs, diplomacy and warfare are seamlessly integrated and conducted on a vast 3D map of China.

Assassin's Creed

Assassin's Creed was released officially on April, 8, 2007; but it was available on warez and p2p sites about 2 months before that.

Needless to say, Ubisoft - who wasn't very happy with it - spent the past few months tracking the leak back to its source before filing a law suit against him.

Ubisoft managed to track the leak back to Charlotte, North Carolina-based Optical Experts Manufacturing (OEM), the company that it had contracted to reproduce copies of the game disc.

According to Ubisoft, OEM's "extraordinary breach of trust and gross negligence" allowed one of the company's employees to take a copy of the game home and leaking it to the internet. This happened because OEM ignored the security procedures they agreed to abide by.

In addition to sales lost to piracy, Ubisoft also claims that the leaked hurt their reputation. As a security precaution, Ubisoft included an intentional bug that caused the game to crash halfway through. The bug was then removed from the retail version, but it still made it way to several online reviews and spread through word of mouth, causing an "irreparable harm" to Ubisoft's reputation.

According to Ubisoft, Assassin's Creed was illegally downloaded more than 700,000 times, but sold 40,000 units only in the 2 months following it US release.

Ubisoft is suing OEM for copyright infringement, breach of contract, and negligence. It is asking for damages and legal fees relating to all three claims, in the amount of no less than $20 million.

A Cool browser game

Played echochrome? Love innovative jap games? Maybe you should try this. Its called Cursor 10, the objective is to get through all the floors you can with 10 cursors, everytime a cursor dies they respawn as 'spirits' which click the same thing you did the last game. Interesting concept.... try it out.

Florensia : a F2P mmo turned OB

Florensia is an upcoming free-to-play Massively Multiplayer Online RPG from Japanese developer Netts.
Register a free account at www.florensia.eu or http://en.florensia-online.com/.

Not much info on it as website is mostly under construction, seems pretty fun, will give more when I try it out.

Edit: Just tried it out for an hour or two. It was kinda buggy, but its open beta so I didnt mind.
There are 2 leveling systems, one land, one by sea, you can get a crew and set out to sea with the boat they give ya. Has a straightforward tutorial and easy to learn. Pretty simple mmo although theres quite a few like this one. Am playing in the US server if anyone wants to come join in the grind and set up a guild if you like ^^. I would give 6/10 for gameplay. Might post some screens later.

Some nice stuff I will be sharing...

I will not provide direct links to any of these gems.
You can google them easily on the side of the blog.
And now....

To start off...

World of Warcraft private servers, Ive personally tried plenty, some nice for raids, some for a more overall feel to WoW(thats free of course :D ). Some servers dedicate themselves for scripting raids, a heavily scripted raid is much fun sometimes if you have friends to play with. But some dedicate themselves for population. It means loads of people in a single server, but it may mean less manageability for GMs but yet you also meet tons of people. One such server I played in was Wowscape (search in google), I used to play in WowLegion alot and still do sometimes. If you need more info, feel free to email or leave a comment ^^ .

Another of one of my old-time favourites, Source. CS Source, Team Fortess 2, HL2 deathmatch..... all free. (Search for digitalzone in google.) They release recent updates to Source Engine based games(and a few others). All of which you can play on LAN easily or you can play online through their collected list of private servers(which most of them have pretty nice latency).

Ok, heres one you can earn some cash with(or so I heard), Its some kinda blog type website where you can set up your own websites called lens, if you get more people to visit them the more you get. It has no limit on how many you can build. Heres how it works, the advertisers it has on all its lens earns 'royalites', you can donate them to charity or send them to your paypal account. So the more lens you have, the more chances for more cash you get. If you are onto this, try Squidoo. Heres my lens, havent put much into it yet, but more will come.

Next...

Heres something important somewhat. Can You RUN it? is a good site for checking out system requirements from old gems to real new out-of-the-oven games. This is really nice especially when you got a new computer or laptop and you really wanna try out if you can play any games before you go through the hassle of installing them. Really useful.

This will be all the time I have for now. I will bring you more next week. Stay tuned.

A Diablo III update.

Blizzard community manager Bashiok, sporting the new Fallen Shaman as an avatar, responded to new inquiries regarding the established 'fair loot' mechanic in Diablo III. According to the CM, players may immediately make items visible to everyone else by picking up the loot and immediately dropping it on the ground.

There seems to be talk that gear won't be class specific - well, not completely. Bashiok says, "Anyone can pick up any chest/shoulder/leg/etc item and wear it. However, there are some weapons/off-hand items that are class specific."

Also, we've learned that the party system will affect the drops directly. Bashiok claims that every additional player added to the party will push back that drop percentage for everyone by "a bit," though apparently it won't affect how many items drop.

Health globes are a different issue - when picked up by one player, all players hurt in the party will be healed in Diablo 3, relative to their HP stats. Health globes haven't been confirmed to drop from bosses mid-battle, however.

Questions over loot also moved over to points of party mates deserving loot. In the new mechanic, it appears that all party member get drops even without participating in the attacks. Blizzard has no official response to this issue.

Actizard or Blizzvision?

Since the day the merger was announced, Vivendi and Activision Games have finally completed all the transactions required to become Activision Blizzard. In a press release that was sent out recently, Activision Blizzard is touted as the "world's most profitable pure-play online and console game publisher."

Sounds like a pretty big claim, but we can see why with Activision Blizzard shares currently at US$ 27.50. However, it's not all about the profits. Robert Kotick, President and CEO of Activision Blizzard explained that the merging opens up a lot of possibilities in the gaming industry for the two companies:

By combining leaders in mass-market entertainment and subscription-based online games, Activision Blizzard has leading market positions across all categories of the rapidly growing interactive entertainment software industry.

As it stands right now, Vivendi (who owns Blizzard) is now a subsidiary of Activision, and currently owns 295.3 million shares of Activision stock. Vivendi will also buy 62.6 million shares in the future, and will end up laying claim on 52 percent of Activision stocks.

What can we expect from the newly-formed Activision Blizzard then? As we have stated previously, there are the much-awaited titles such as Diablo 3, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, and even Guitar Hero. But will they also try and merge two of their franchises, perhaps? We're still waiting for our Guitar Hero meets World of Warcraft game, Actizard.
